Thesis
The written work in the Master's programme is submitted as a thesis (approximately 30-50 pages: ca. 15,000 - 25,000 words) and is prepared under the direction of a staff member of one of the Research Departments (including post-doctoral fellows). The thesis must treat a subject in the field of theology or religious studies and is to be chosen in the area of specialisation. The name of the promoter and topic of the thesis are to be submitted to the Research Department for its recommendation and approval. Subsequently, research projects must be approved by the Teaching Committee. The text may be written in English, French, Dutch or German. If the thesis work is written in a language other than English, an English summary must be provided. The Faculty guidelines regarding footnoting and bibliography must be implemented. In composing the thesis, the student must demonstrate:
(i) the ability to select a well-defined topic;
(ii) the ability to assemble and appropriate relevant scholarly literature in an orderly and structured fashion;
(iii) the ability to study relevant texts in the original languages, to arrive at a status quaestionis that offers a survey of the present state of research on the chosen topic, and to provide a structured and coherent description of the research project.
The thesis will be evaluated by the evaluation commission, which consists of the promotor and two correctors. In cases where there is a co-promotor, he/she will constitue a fourth member of the commission. The sum of the points accorded will be 100 (promotor [and co-promotor] 40, correctors 2 x 20, and common grade 20). The thesis will be weighted at 40% of the total points for the Master, and the courses will be weighted at 60%. Students who were enrolled in the final year of the Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Religious Studies in the previous academic year, may continue and extend that year's Essay to a thesis of about 80-100 pages (40,000-50,000 words). This thesis should meet the same standards as the thesis described above.
New students follow the thesis writing seminar as part of their written work.
The text may be written in English, French, Dutch or German. On the recommendation of the Research Unit, the Teaching Committee can give permission for the thesis to be written in another language (e.g. Italian or Spanish).
If the thesis work is written in a language other than English, an English summary must in any case be provided.
