The Faculty of Law at KU Leuven values the ideals of student mobility set forth in the Bologna Accords, and that spirit of internationalism is alive in well in Leuven. The Master of Laws is an ideal programme for international students who have completed an LL.B. degree at a non-Belgian university. It offers the opportunity to obtain a Master's degree from one of Europe's most highly regarded law faculties and provides a valuable platform from which to launch a career as a global lawyer in a genuinely European environment.

The Master of Laws is an initial Master's programme. You can follow this programme on a full-time or part-time basis.

Profile

The ideal prospective student:
- has basic knowledge of local, European and international law and has a general understanding of the mutual relationship between these three systems of law
- is capable of situating law in its social, historic and geographical context and is capable of subjecting law to critical, reflective research
- has mastered and sufficiently extended his/her ability to reason in the abstract and his/her ability to achieve a synthesis and analysis in order to think in a creative and law-forming manner
- has acquired the juristic manner to reason and argue
- has knowledge of sources typical of law
- has core skills in written and oral expression in English

Objectives

In this Master program we provide students with both a comprehensive and deepened knowledge of European or International law. In doing so the knowledge and reflective capacities acquired in the national Bachelor of Law programme, wherever followed in the world, are put in a specific transnational perspective, allowing the student in turn to get a better understanding also of his national legal context. The Master program also accentuates the need for a good methodological and comparative legal training. As such the clustering of some basic courses of European respectively international law, will give the student the opportunity to explore a wider subject matter, whilst a series of options will nevertheless allow the student further specialization in a specific area of European or international law. As European and international law are interwoven, it is also made that the student next to his major choice for European or international law, will also address respectively international or European law. The Master paper as no other element of the program will show the ability of the student to integrate his national law, European law and international law understanding into a, largely methodically and comparatively based, capacity to view a legal problem in a truly legal holistic perspective. As such the student will be made fit for functioning in truly international and multidisciplinary surroundings, - be it international institutions, multinational enterprises or international law firms, combining an open mind with an in depth knowledge of the area of law he or she has specialized in.

After graduation

The Master of Law programme is a stepping stone to an interesting legal career. As experts in European and international Law, our students work in international law firms, a wide variety of public service fields at all levels of the government and in European and international institutions or interest groups. Our graduates are also recruited by non-governmental organisations and companies in the private sector.
