Applicants should have strong English language skills and a solid knowledge of statistics and research methodology. They should be interested in social policy as such, in its development and implementation, in social problems and social change and should be motivated to analyse these subjects more profoundly.

The IMPALLA programme sets specific prerequisites concerning minimal statistical level of the applicant, language skills, diploma, motivation letter, reference letters.

The programme has three major objectives :
- to offer a solid theoretical foundation in comparative socio-economic policies, at the European level and beyond;
- to provide a thorough training in advanced research methodology
- to provide well-founded expertise in policy evaluation while developing the corresponding technical skills.

At the end of the programme the participants should be able to :
- design and carry out individual research projects in the area of policy analysis and evaluation, as well as to be able to participate in the conception, execution and supervision of team research;
- have knowledge of contemporary social and political theories which aim at explaining societal change and be able to tackle current social policy issues and present their analysis and results in an internationally accepted publication;
- take part in and position themselves on a good multidisciplinary and comparative basis in any debate concerning policy analysis and evaluation;
- make research results relevant for policy making; be able to translate questions from policy-makers into research questions, deal with them and explain the results to policy-makers.
In a globalising world, social policy issues are of central importance. New jobs are constantly created in the fields of implementation and evaluation of social policies. Past IMPALLA graduates have pursued careers as consultants to national ministries and administrations or international institutions, academic institutions, advanced research centres, or private firms specialising in auditing and impact assessment.
In short, the programme qualifies graduates for top-level careers as social researchers in either the public or private sector.
KU Leuven organises a Verderstudeerbeurs each spring. In addition, faculties also organise information sessions for many of their bridging and graduate programmes.

The Master of Science in Social Policy Analysis is an interuniversity degree programme organised jointly by the Centre for Sociological Research at KU Leuven (Belgium) and the Centre d'Etudes de Populations, de Pauvreté et de Politiques Socio- Economiques (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg). Associated institutions include the University of Tilburg (the Netherlands), the University of Nancy II (France), and the University of Luxembourg (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg). Students reside in Luxembourg for seven months and in Leuven for three months. The programme attracts students from all around the world.
