Students with a degree obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community

All students must be formally enrolled (and have fulfilled all conditions) before the start of the academic year. Students must participate in the program from the first day of the academic year and attend the welcome and introductory sessions during the first day of the academic year.

Any Master's degree in the Humanities

After an abridged programme

On the basis of the following degrees, or similar degrees, obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community:

  • After successfully completing the abridged programme: Bachelor in de archeologie (na toelating) ( Leuven, 95 sp. ) , the following degrees are accepted:
    • Bachelor in de geografie (Leuven)
    • Bachelor in de geowetenschappen (Leuven) (Afstudeerrichting Geografie)
  • After successfully completing the abridged programme: Bachelor in de taal- en letterkunde (na toelating) ( Leuven, 56 sp. ) , the following degrees are accepted:
    • Bachelor in de taal- en letterkunde (Leuven)
  • After successfully completing the abridged programme: Bachelor in de kunstwetenschappen (na toelating) ( Leuven, 75 sp. ) , the following degrees are accepted:
    • Master in de architectuur (Brussel, Gent)
    • Master in de ingenieurswetenschappen: architectuur (Leuven)

Additional information

Students with a degree that is not listed above can be admitted on the basis of previously acquired competences. They can submit a survey of previous studies, which shows that they have a relevant academic background, and a motivation letter to the 'Centre for European Studies'.

Language requirements
Students who are not native English speakers are required to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language.
Students who obtained their secondary school diploma or academic degree in English (= the programme was fully taught in English) at an institution of the Flemish Community can be exempted from this requirement.

The approved tests are:
-  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), for which the minimum total score required is 100 (TOEFL iBT)
-  The International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic test), for which the minimum score required is band 7.0-7.5
-  Certificate in Advanced English (University of Cambridge examinations): Grade B.
-  Interuniversity Test of Academic English (ITACE), for which the C1 level is required.

Students with a Flemish degree should send an email to the esinfo@kuleuven.be.
•  For students who obtained their Flemish degree in English, this email should include your diploma and a transcript of records.
•  For students who didn’t obtain their Flemish degree in English, this email should include your diploma, a transcript of records and an English proficiency certificate (see above).

Candidates can email these documents until the last Monday before the start of the academic year.



Students with a degree not obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community

All students must be formally enrolled (and have fulfilled all conditions) before the start of the academic year. Students must participate in the program from the first day of the academic year and attend the welcome and introductory sessions during the first day of the academic year.
Students who did not obtain their previous degree(s) at an institution of the Flemish Community should submit an application via the Admissions Office: https://www.kuleuven.be/english/application/.

Diploma requirements

The Master of European Studies programme admits holders of the following university degrees:
• Bachelor of Political and Social Sciences, History, Arts, Law, Economics, Anthropology, Communication Studies, Theology, Education, Philosophy, European Studies;
• Any Master’s degree in the Humanities and Social Sciences;
• A Master’s degree in other disciplines, if the candidate has professional experience in the field of study of MAES.

The ‘Master of European Studies: Transnational and Global Perspectives’ is a demanding and specialised interdisciplinary programme. Please only apply if in your previous studies you obtained at least 'cum laude' ('honours' / 'with distinction' / 'onderscheiding') and if you have gained a sound knowledge of European history and the European institutions, and if you have been introduced to the basic principles of Economics and Law.

You should also have experience with writing a substantial research paper (bachelor or master paper) and have at least basic heuristic and research skills.

Language requirements

Evidence of proficiency in the English language is not required for students who hold a higher education degree obtained in Australia, English speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the USA. All other candidates must submit an additional English proficiency test. Belgian students who want to participate in the Master of European Studies: Transnational and Global Perspectives are also required to take a test. Applicants should arrange a date for their language test well ahead of their application.


The approved tests are:
-  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), for which the minimum total score required is 100 (TOEFL iBT)
-  The International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic test), for which the minimum score required is band 7.0-7.5
-  Certificate in Advanced English (University of Cambridge examinations): Grade B.

Results of the language proficiency test have to be provided at the latest on the day of registration for the Master’s programme. A test registration however should already be uploaded onto the application form in case the applicant has not yet received their test results at the time of the application.

Additional requirements

Students who only hold non-EEA degrees are required to add the following documents to their application:

1. an English translation of the content of the courses followed during previous studies that touch on quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies in your discipline(s) (e.g. Introduction to Research Methods, Research Design, Qualitative Research Methods, Statistics, Quantitative Research Methods, Research Seminar, …).

2. a research paper in which applicants prove that they have a firm grasp of research methodology and academic writing. This can be a research paper written during previous studies or a new research proposal. It should at least include a research question and a review of the academic literature.
