Diploma requirements
Applicants must have completed a Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or a highly related field, encompassing a minimum of 180 ECTS credits or equivalent academic qualifications from an internationally recognized university.Applicants must furthermore have taken at least 60 ECTS credits in the area of electrical or mechanical engineering, and at least 30 ECTS credits in basic sciences, consisting of mathematics (including calculus, numerical methods, algebra and probability theory), mechanics and physics.
Applicants are expected to have obtained credits for the 5 bachelor-level courses listed below (or equivalent courses) when starting the Master of Engineering: Energy.
1. Electrical Energy and Drives (at KU Leuven only in Dutch H01L8A Elektrische Energie en Aandrijvingen)
2. Fluid Mechanics (at KU Leuven only in Dutch H08W4A Fluïdummechanica)
3. Heat Transfer (at KU Leuven only in Dutch H08W5A Warmteoverdracht)
4. System and Control theory (at KU Leuven only in Dutch H01M8A Systeemtheorie en regeltechniek)
5. Energy Conversion Machines and Systems (at KU Leuven only in Dutch H01N2A Energieconversiemachines en -systemen)
If this is not the case, it is necessary to catch up on these courses beforehand in order to increase the chances of success. Applicants who do not master the Dutch language should do this by independent study (a list of advised literature can be found here). Applicants who master the Dutch language are advised to take up the Bachelor courses for which credits have not been granted yet. Up to 6 credits can be taken within the Broadening Programme of the Master. If the number of these Bachelor course credits exceeds 6, then an additional registration in the Preparation Programme (only available in Dutch: 'Voorbereidingsprogramma') is needed.
For this programme a high Grade Point Average (GPA) for the BSc study is expected. A solid background in both electrical and mechanical engineering is of prime importance. Shortcomings in that prerequisite could be acceptable only for students with very high academic standing (both high GPA and prestigious Alma Mater), since self-study for shortcomings will be required.

Broadening Programme
Independent on the option, the students have to choose 6 credits of free elective courses on master-level. These include the possibility of an industrial internship (6 credits) or (international) exchange components. This choice allows to specialize more in the chosen energy-option, or to broaden the point of view with additional courses from other option-clusters or by taking up courses beyond the field of energy.
Note: these 6 credits can also be filled in with courses from the adjustment programme, when this is necessary.
The student chooses maximally one of the five courses H05U5A, H05U6A, H05U7A, H04K9A & H0O97A within the Master Energy of 120 credits.
A combined choice of the courses H04F2A (Industriële stage / Industrial Internship) and H06M9A (Bedrijfservaring / Industrial Experience – under “General Interest Courses”) within the Master Energy of 120 credits is not permitted. Adjustment Programme
Students are expected to have obtained credits for the 5 bachelor courses listed below (or equivalent courses) when starting the Master of Engineering: Energy. When this is not the case, it is advised to catch up these courses in order to increase the chances of success. Students who do not master the Dutch language should do this by independent study (a list of advised literature can be found here). Students who master the Dutch language are advised to take up the Bachelor courses for which credits have not been granted yet. Up to 6 credits can be taken within the Broadening Programme of the Master. If the number of these Bachelor course credits exceeds 6, then an additional subscription in the Preparation Programme (only available in Dutch: 'Voorbereidingsprogramma') is needed.

General Interest Courses
The student chooses at least 6 credits from the following list, taking into account that:
- The course 'Religions' (H0N82A) is compulsory. Students who have passed a course with the same content, before starting this programme, must choose another course of 3 ECTS from the General Interest Courses.
- The course H04X2A (Project Management) has to be taken up in the same year as the Master's Thesis.
- A combined choice of the courses H06M9A (Bedrijfservaring / Industrial Experience) and H04F2A (Industriële stage / Industrial Internship – under “General Interest Courses”) within the Master Energy of 120 credits is not permitted.
