General information
Taught by
Aims
The purpose of this course is to describe a particular domain of English grammar in detail, with a view to exploring its formal properties and the meanings that they encode and mapping out the distinct categories that it consists of.
Previous knowledge
* BA level in English
* Familiarity with the main grammatical categories of the English noun phrase, verb phrase and clause, and, more in general, with the basic notions of English grammar and linguistics.
Content
This year we will consider the linguistic category of -ing forms more closely. We will discuss, among other things, the formal and semantic distinction between nominal and verbal gerunds (e.g. wedding, savings vs. They say [Saddam's targeting of Israel] did not achieve its objective vs. I feel such a mug for [signing the agreement]) and the resemblances and differences between gerundive and participial -ing (e.g. a fast-growing economy, boiling water, my sister is good at arguing, [being a lawyer]). Students will be asked to carry out a small corpus study of -ing forms and present their descriptive findings and categorization in class.
