Aims
The course provides the participants with a broad overview of the various concepts, topics, approaches and instruments in the management of innovation and technology.
Content
The course consists of 5 major parts: Part 1: Economics of technology and innovation management Part 2: Models of the innovation process and innovation strategy Part 3: Operations issues in innovation management Part 4: Managing teams and individuals in innovation Part 5: The environment of the innovative firms Each module provides the students with a scientific approach toward an important aspect of the innovation process. As a consequence, major scientific as well as application-oriented articles are provided as reading materials for each module. The first part highlights the disciplinary roots or origins of the innovation process. More specifically, we highlight economic studies of the innovation process. The economic studies delve deeper into the relationship between market structure and innovation. The work and insights of Joseph Schumpeter are discussed in detail. An overview of current economic thinking on technology and innovation is provided. A detailed analysis of the role of intellectual property as a new production factor is provided. The second part develops models of the innovation process and examines the strategic management of technology and innovation. Concepts such as the development of technology portfolios (including selection criteria for innovation projects and programs) and technology roadmaps are discussed. The link with fundamental concepts from the strategy literature is provided. The third part discusses the management of day-to-day operations in innovation environments. We discuss the following themes: (1) organizing innovation projects, (2) critical success factors in managing innovation projects, (3) the concept of project performance in innovative settings, and (4) techniques and approaches to support project management in innovative environments. The fourth part concerns the management of innovative teams and professionals. We focus on the creation of productive climates for innovative professionals and on the development of appropriate motivational and incentive systems for scientists and engineers. The fifth part analyses how the firm can make maximal use of its environment to foster its innovation performance. The role of externalities, spillovers and networks is discussed. Regional innovation clusters are used as an example of how external context can shape and influence firm-level innovation efforts.

Explanation
Determination of grades The grades are determined by the course holder(s) (titularis), as announced via Toledo and the examination schedule. The result is computed and expressed as a whole number on a scale of 20. The paper is counts for 40% of the grade, the final exam counts for 60% of the grade. The grade for the paper are only taken into account if the student succeeds in the final exam. Term of deliverance and deadline will be determined by the lecturer (titularis) and communicated via Toledo.
Evaluation third examination period During an academic year, the student has 2 chances to participate to the exam: a first time during the first or second examination period, according to the semester of scheduling, and a second time during the third examination period. Also in the third examination period, the (group) assignment is part of the final grade: -Due to the characteristics of the assignment, the same grade of the first/second examination period will be copied to the third examination period
