Aims
Knowledge:
- The students acquire insight into the fundamental aspects of the identity of the pastor and pastoral work in care services.
- The students acquire insight into the fundamental aspects of the identity of clients with functional impairments, with special attention for deaf and hard-of-hearing clients.
Skills:
- On the basis of these insights students are able to form their own view on the identity of the pastor, pastoral work and the client in care services.
Attitude:
- The students develop an attitude of critical thinking about the identity of the pastor, pastoral work and the client in care services.
Previous knowledge
Familiarity with care services can be an advantage.
Content
In the lectures of Prof. Liégeois the following topics concerning the identity of the pastor and pastoral work in care services will be treated:
- The identity of the pastor: relation between person, profession and ministry
- The identity of pastoral work: relation between pastoral care, spiritual care and integral care
- The pastoral identity in a care service: relation between confidential space and integrated care
- Challenges for pastoral care
In the lectures of Prof. Broesterhuizen the following topics will be treated:
- Identity of the client: different viewpoints on functional impairment, i.e. the medical model, the social model and the cultural model
- Views of theologians with a functional impairment.
- The deconstruction of the concept of disability.
- Self-willing clients: between appropriation and expropriation of functional impairment.
- Active involvement of people in pastoral ministry: examples from Deaf Pastoral Ministry.

Explanation
For each of both professors a short paper with four statements should be written:
- Two statements about the topics treated in the course and two statements about the literature.
- Each statement is not only a reproduction of a point of view of the course but should also express a creative and critical opinion of the student on the course.
- A statement is no longer than one page.
- Submission of the paper by e-mail one week before the oral examination
Oral Examination
- Oral examination will take place separately by both professors
- Motivation of and discussion about two of the four statements
