Aims
- To analyse the complex relationship between Scripture and ethics.
- To develop critical insight into different theological-ethical paradigms to approach Scripture.
- To apply those approaches to specific biblical texts.
Previous knowledge
The students have elementary knowledge of both (theological) ethics and biblical exegesis.
Content
In a context where fundamentalist use of religious texts forms an increasing danger, there is a strong need for a renewed understanding of the complex relationship between Scripture and theological ethics. This course will discuss different influential and/or promising approaches of this question, ranging from traditional (patristics, Talmud, Aquinas) to more recent paradigms (hermeneutics, deconstruction, virtue ethics, liberation theology, scriptural reasoning). The general question of the relation between Bible and ethics will be developed in interaction with specific texts of biblical corpus (Genesis, Isaiah's songs of the suffering servant, Paul,...).

Course Material
A reader will be sold at the course shop of the faculty. A list of additional literature will be distributed on Toledo.
Course activities
In order to stimulate interactive discussion, students will be asked to read certain biblical texts in preparation of the classes. Students will elaborate in a paper of 2000 words upon one additional biblical text, upon which they will apply one of the paradigms between They can chose their topic out of a list of additional literature, or make their own proposal - to be sent for approval to Prof. Yves De Maeseneer, yves.demaeseneer@theo.kuleuven.be

Students can bring their own bible with them. Students send their paper before June 1, 2011 by e-mail. This paper counts for 30% of the exam.
