Aims
- Obtaining a nuanced view on the way the early 20th century German Protestant theologian Ernst Troeltsch answers fundamental and systematical theological questions in dialogue with both tradition and modernity .
- Being able to distinguish the views of Troeltsch from those of his theological contemporaries.
- Being able to read and understand primary texts (in English translation) written by this theologian and to reflect on their significance then and now.
Content
After an introduction to life and work of Ernst Troeltsch (1865-1923) and to his views on "modern" theology, (excerpts from) the following works will be studied in class:
- Historical and Dogmatic Method in Theology (1900)
- The Absoluteness of Christianity and the History of Religions (1902; 1911)
- What Does ‘Essence of Christianity’ Mean? (1903)
- The Significance of the Historical Existence of Jesus for Faith (1911)
- The Christian Faith (1912-1913)
- The Social Teaching of the Christian Churches (1912
- The Place of Christianity among the World-Religions (1924)

Course Material
A reader with primary texts (in English translation) will be made available. The reader also contains a secundary bibliography which the students are free to explore.
Course activities
An important aim of the course is to read original theological texts by an important modern theologian. The students are expected to read the selected 9 texts prior to the course meetings and to publish their original reactions on the discussion forum (TOLEDO). During the course meetings the course holder will give some more background useful to develop a more profound understanding of the same texts. At the end of the course students are expected to submit the final version of their reactions (between 500-1000 words).

8/20: maximum for the timely submission of the written reactions and the quality thereof . During the exam there will be asked to comment upon one text fragment from Troeltsch which they have studied before (6/20) and upon one unseen fragment (6/20).
