Content
In order for theology to affirm its plausibility in the present, postmodern context it must, as fides quaerens intellectum, relate in a new way with contemporary critical consciousness. In the lectures present thinking patterns will be analysed and a model of critical consciousness developed. Afterwards, this model will be applied to the Christian narrative, which will be criticised as a ‘master narrative’. Finally, this model will be theologically recontextualised, resulting in a project for a fundamental theology which adequately relates to a context in which the consciousness of plurality, particularity and heterogeneity has become predominant. In 2009-2010, especially the theological consequences of Jean-François Lyotard's postmodern philosophy will be investigated and discussed.
Course Material
Course notes will be made available at the Cursusdienst; they also include a reader with the articles to be read by the students in addition to the lectures. Supplementary material will be made available in class or through Toledo.
Course activities
Students actively participate in the lectures by - preparing them through the reading assignments,
- attentively following the thinking patterns as developed during the lectures, and
- critically engaging the discussion of these patterns and the theological implications thereof.
