Aims
Previous knowledge
Intermediate knowledge of Hebrew is required; students without such knowledge, who want to follow the course, should contact the instructor. Most of the secondary literature will be in English.
Content
The course will discuss the different so-called “Rule-texts” found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, and explore what light they shed on the nature of the community behind the scrolls. In the course we will read these Rule Texts, notably the Rule of the Community (in its various versions), the Damascus Document, and the Rule of the Congregation. We will also look at the classical scholarly views on the relation between those rules, the connection to the Qumran-Essene hypothesis, as well as recent revisions of those theories.
