Master of Advanced Studies in Theology and Religion
Students choose a major and take the two Research Courses (8 pts.), the Specialisation Course (4 pts.) and the Seminar (4 pts.) of this major (16 pts.). Students also choose five Research Courses, one from each of the other majors (20 pts.). One course can be exchanged for a Specialisation Course.
Students also write a master/research paper (16 pts.) and choose electives to the value of at least 8 pts.
Instead of the Courses, Seminars or Electives of this programme, students are free to choose an equivalent from the programmes of the theological faculty of the Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve
http://www.ucl.ac.be/etudes/programmes/fr/teco.htm . Students must submit their request to do so to the Secretary of the Teaching Committee and the Academic Secretary.
Research Courses
Students take both the Research Courses of their major and select one Research Course from each of the other majors. One course can be exchanged for a Specialisation Course. It is possible to select two additional research courses as electives.

Students are free to choose their electives (8 pts.) from
(a) all other courses under 'Research Courses' and 'Specialisation Courses',
(b) the Theological and Religious Studies Courses of the 4th year in so far as there is a clear link with the student's research paper,
(c) the list of electives.
As part of their personal study project, and with sufficient justification, students are free to include equivalent units from other academic programmes as part of their own individual programme.
The elective courses can also be replaced by (interdisciplinary) projects as part of individual initiatives, (international) exchange programmes, departmental activities (e.g. conferences), projects of research centres and groups. Such proposals can be made by the relevant groups, the students and/or professors, and the Teaching Committee. Proposals will be submitted to the Teaching Committee for approval.

Research Paper
Students in the Master of Advanced Studies in Theology and Religion programme are expected to write a research paper in which they present the results of their study of an original research topic. As a rule, the research paper is dedicated to an issue in one of the theological disciplines or in the field of religious studies.
The aim of this paper can be conceived in two ways: (a) the development of a theological hypothesis, by means of comprehensive discussion; (b) the presentation of a status quaestionis, which offers a survey of the present state of research on a particular topic.
The research paper must conform to the standards of scientific research. It must be based on the independent appropriation of primary sources and secondary literature relevant to the issue under discussion.
The research paper is prepared under the direction of a staff member of one of the Research Units (including post-doctoral fellows) and should be approximately 50 pages in length (25,000 words).
Students who were enrolled in the Master of Theology and Religious Studies programme may continue and extend that year's thesis to a research paper of about 80-100 pages (40,000-50,000 words).
The name of the promoter and topic of the thesis are to be submitted to the Research Unit for its recommendation and approval. Subsequently, research projects must be approved by the Teaching Committee.
On the recommendation of the Research Unit, the Teaching Committee can give permission for the thesis to be written in another language (e.g. Italian or Spanish).
If the thesis work is written in a language other than English, an English summary must in any case be provided.
The Faculty guidelines regarding footnoting and bibliography must be implemented.
The thesis will be evaluated by the evaluation commission, which consists of the promoter and two correctors. In cases where there is a co-promoter, he/she will constitute a fourth member of the commission. The sum of the points accorded will be 100 (promoter [and co-promoter] 40, correctors 2 x 20, and common grade 20). The thesis will be weighted at 40% of the total points for the Master, and the courses will be weighted at 60%.
New students follow the thesis writing seminar as part of their written work.
